Furnival Chambers (90 tenants) 30-32 Furnival Street, London, EC4A 1JQ Furnival Chambers is a thriving set specialising in defending and prosecuting the full spectrum of criminal cases. Members of chambers are also actively involved in regulatory and disciplinary proceedings. Our tenants are involved in the most serious cases across the country. Furnival is proud that 10 of our pupils have become tenants in the last 5 years, all of whom are now thriving and developing busy practices. We are looking for independent, tenacious candidates who have a talent for communicating with a wide range of people and have a strong commitment to criminal law. They should be able to demonstrate an eye for detail and sound analytical skills. We encourage candidates who have not achieved at least a 2.1 in their degree to explain any exceptional circumstances that may have affected the result. Our pupils primarily shadow their pupil supervisors for the first six months but arrangements are also made to follow other members of chambers to ensure that they get to see a wide range of work and different styles of advocacy. At the start of pupillage each pupil is designated a ‘godparent’ (a younger tenant in chambers) to help them ease into chambers life and help them with any queries that they might have. In their first six months our pupils benefit from our weekly in-house advocacy course. In our advocacy sessions, members of chambers (junior tenants to silks) take an active role in developing the skills of our pupils. We consider this an important part of pupillage and a way of ensuring our pupils get the opportunity to learn from as many tenants as possible. Furnival provides pupils with £9,000 during the first six (paid in monthly installments) and guarantees an income of £9,000 during the second six (paid in monthly installments). During this second six most pupils can expect to earn more than £9000, and no pupil will pay any rent to Chambers until they have earned a rent-free £10,000.

Broadway House - 12 months - September 2019

In recent years we have had the benefit of being able to select strong candidates for pupillage. All pupillages are awarded with a view to tenancy. The guaranteed earnings during the second six are always exceeded. During this time our pupils experience a mix of work; prosecuting on behalf of the CPS in the magistrates’ court, assisting disclosure matters in CSE prosecutions, observing defence work in the Crown Court and preparing and observing work in the County Court, and the immigration and employment tribunals. We have found that this structure works well and provides our pupils with a firm foundation for practice. We have also found that this approach works well for chambers and for the pupil supervisors, and contributes to forming the kind good working relationships which we achieve during pupilage and generally throughout Broadway House. We are looking for candidates with the following qualities – Academic – strong educational background; both legal and other areas. During the sift of applications we attribute a score to academic achievement. This is moderated to take into account the stage which candidates have reached at the time of the application. We recognise that candidates obtain their education via differing routes and allow for this. Whilst it is the case that exam results are only one aspect of a candidate’s qualities, due to the high number of applicants, we will only consider candidates with a first degree of 2:1 or above. Practical experience – a common denominator for most applicants is the completion of mini-pupillages and/or marshalling. In recent years most shortlisted candidates have had fairly substantial experience in either legal or other areas of work. We include in this voluntary work and mooting. In the past decade most, but not all, of our pupils have previously been in employment; conducting litigation, and, in some instances, advocacy in courts and tribunals. We ask that candidates demonstrate skills of responsibility, caseload management, advocacy, communication and negotiation. Candidates can also demonstrate these skills via pro bono activities, and with work which is not in the legal sphere. Personal attributes – we expect that candidates can exhibit both analytical skills and the ability to influence the panel by wasy of argument. We ask that applicants demonstrate a firm commitment to a career at the Bar. We recognise that many candidates maintain that commitment in the face of adversity. We prefer that they can show a commitment to practice on the North Eastern Circuit. Application process – The selection panel is formed is made up of members of chambers, with the aim to achieve maximum diversity in terms of gender, ethnicity, practice areas and seniority. All panel members have completed the Equality and Diversity training, as provided by the Bar Council. Chambers adhere to the Code of Conduct in relation to recruitment and training. The process is designed with reference to the Fair Recruitment Guide. It is in 3 stages. We regret that due to the volume of applications, we are not able to provide feedback for unsuccessful candidates, following the sift. The next stage is that of first interview. Candidates are asked a series of questions which are designed to test the qualities which are set out above. The final stage is the final interview. This takes the form of a practical advocacy exercise, with time allotted for preparation. We give written feedback to all candidates who reach both interview stages.

Chambers was founded 40 years ago as a radical set with the aim of representing all sectors of the community and in particular disadvantaged groups. Chambers has since grown and developed to cover many areas of practice but we continue to have a strong commitment to ensuring access to justice for all through first-class representation. We are committed to representation of legally aided clients, which we believe is critically important at a time when legal aid cuts continue to have a pernicious effect. In addition to our legally aided work many of our members are involved with pro bono work in local communities and internationally with the same aim of working with vulnerable groups. Chambers prides itself on its multi-disciplinary character, ensuring the best representation for our clients by benefiting from expertise within and across practice areas. Our areas of practice include crime, immigration, housing and community care, employment, family law, public and administrative law, international law, extradition, regulatory law, mental health, prison law and inquests. We are offering a 12 month pupillage for one pupil to commence October 2018. A grant of £15,000 will be awarded made up of £7,500 in the first six and £7,500 guaranteed earnings in the second six.
